How to Dress for Summer to Stay Cool and Look Cool

How to Dress for Summer to Stay Cool and Look Cool

Summer clothing tends to involve minimal fabric but somehow maximum sweating. That’s often because most summer clothes are made from plastic, better known as synthetic fabrics. This guide will help you choose summer clothing that keeps you cool while looking cool.

Why do synthetic fabrics make you sweat?

Synthetic fabrics like polyester are made from plastic. While they might not feel like plastic, wearing them on a hot day is basically like stepping out in a bin bag. These materials do have their place, especially in swimwear and activewear, but that lightweight white floaty dress you bought for a heatwave? It shouldn’t be synthetic.

Which fabrics should you wear instead?

Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable. They allow heat to pass through, helping to regulate your body temperature and reduce sweating. And as a bonus, they are much better for our bodies and the planet.

How can I tell what a fabric is made of?

Before you even try something on, check the fabric composition tag, which is usually found on the inside side seam. On a website, it should tell you in the product description. If it says cotton, linen, lyocell, or modal, that means it’s natural and you’re good to go. If it says polyester, polyamide, viscose, acrylic, spandex, or rayon, it’s synthetic and one to avoid.

Pro tip: Avoid blends that mix natural and synthetic fibres, like 50% cotton, 50% polyester, you’re still going to be sweating! A small amount of elastane (around 5%) is okay if you're after a bit of stretch, but watch out for smocking, those tight elastic threads can get sweaty fast.

Don’t forget the lining…

The lining is often the forgotten fabric. Even if the outer layer is cotton or linen, a polyester lining will trap in the heat and sweat making the natural outer layer essentially useless. Always remember to check both layers!

Where can I find natural fabric clothing?

One of the biggest challenges is that high street and fast fashion brands mostly use synthetic materials as it’s cheaper. Some hidden gems do exist in these brands, just be prepared to hunt for them.

Here are some other options:

  • Sustainable brands: Many small or independent labels focus on natural fabrics. I’ve discovered so many of them on TikTok alone since starting my brand, use the search bar and start scrolling. It’s better to support independent brands than major fast fashion or high street retailers too.
  • Vintage clothing: A lot of vintage pieces are made from natural fabrics. It takes some digging, but you can find timeless styles that are also breathable if vintage is your thing.

To stay cool, avoid synthetic fabrics such as:

  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Rayon
  • Acrylic
  • Spandex

And go for natural fabrics such as:

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Hemp
  • Bamboo
  • Silk
  • Wool
