How to care for your swimwear
It's a well-known struggle that swimwear often goes see-through, discolours, and sags with wear. Not only is it in your wallet’s best interest to make your swimwear last as long as possible, but it’s also better for the planet. Did you know it can take up to 200 years for swimwear to degrade in landfill? That’s why it’s so important to care for your swimwear properly and extend its lifespan.
Invest in Quality
The first factor in longevity is quality. Investing in well-made swimwear ensures it lasts longer than cheaper, fast-fashion alternatives. However, no matter the price point, proper care is essential to maintaining your bikini or swimsuit.
Rinse Immediately
To protect your swimwear from chlorine, salt water, and sunscreen, rinse it as soon as you take it off. Avoid wringing or twisting it to remove excess water—this can weaken the fabric and elastane, reducing its lifespan.
Wash with Care
Hand washing in warm water with a mild detergent is the best way to clean your swimwear, even if the care label suggests otherwise. Harsh chemicals can break down the fabric over time.
If you prefer to use a washing machine (because life gets busy!), place your swimwear in a mesh laundry bag and use a gentle cycle. Follow the care label’s temperature guide, but remember—the lower the temperature, the better.
Dry Properly
Lay your swimwear flat to dry, keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration. After all, you chose that color for a reason!
Caring for your swimwear takes a little patience, but it’s worth it when your pieces stay looking fresh season after season.
